Hurry Up and Place Bets on the Eurovision Song Contest

The odds makers are taking bets on the Eurovision Song Contest. The first Semi-Final (there will be two Semi-Finals for the first time in the history of the contest) is only a day away, but the odds will be taken until the last minute.

According to the odds offered by the European online bookmaker Bet365, Russia has become a favorite with odds 3/1. Serbia is a runner-up with odds 5/1.

Dima Bilan will represent Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. He is considered to be veteran there as he participated in the contest in 2006 where he attracted the world’s attention.

Serbia will be represented by Jelena Tomašević. It goes without saying that it will be really hard for her to win. Se is already being compared with Bora Dugic – the winner of the last Eurovision Song Contest.

Ukraine at 11/2 and Armenia at 6/1 are the next countries on the list of the Eurovision song contest odds.

Andrew Lyman’s Plans

Andrew Lyman, the UK Gambling Commission’s most honorable Director, is going to take a senior executive role with the Association of British Bookmakers.

By stepping down from his present position, Lyman is looking forward to being part of a group that has more ‘commercial’ interests.

During his remaining time as a Director, he’ll be devoted to internal project work.

The Kentucky Derby Results

Almost no one doubted that the Kentucky Derby favorite, Big Brown, would win. As soon as the horses separated in the back stretch, Big Brown controlled most of the rest of the way.

Big Brown won the Derby by four and three quarter lengths, and will most likely be favored to win the next step of the Triple Crown in two weeks. Though there has been no Triple Crown winner for a long time.

Eight Belles turned out to finish second. Unfortunately the horse broke both of his ankles and had to be euthanized after the race.

Betsafe – the World’s Best Bookmaker

According to the opinion of sports and gaming magazine TIPS, Betsafe is the world’s best bookmaker. The best bookmaker has been elected on the base of the following characters: usability, how to register, options for withdrawing and depositing money and customer support.

Betsafe managed to score 81 points out of 100. As a result, other well-known bookmakers such as Nordicbet, Bet365, Pinnacle, Expekt and Ladbrokes have been left behind.

Despite the winning, Betsafe is not going to stop its development. “We have a number of markets where we can improve, something we work with on a daily basis. Our most important focus is the close contact we have with our players,” said CEO Henrik Perrson.

Greek player “K Vasileiadis” hit the jackpot playing Super Seven progressive slot online at Paradise Casino belonging to the UK-based online gambling group SportingBet. The winning is reported to be largest one in the history of the operator and it amounts to $1.47 million.

On May 9 the winner is supposed to go to London to receive the winning at SportingBet’s office.

Will Hill after the Large Payout

The win at last week’s Grand National horse race turned out to be unexpected even for such a well established bookmaker in the UK – Will Hill. It’s been announced that the company has been set back GBP 7 million in funds.

Very few in the land and online casinos betting industry could anticipate that Comply or Die would win the horse race. As a result, Will Hill had to pay out more than it was expected.

Fortunately, the company could afford this pay out and there is no real concern that the company will show any long-term negative effects based on the large payout.

Spanish Betting Market Expanding

Now Spanish residents are able to bet in Spain’s first sports betting shop (under the joint venture’s Victoria brand) opened last week. Before that Spaniards had to go online to bet on sporting events.

Gleaming with chrome and glass, Victoria’s new shop which is located above a Codere casino, Madrid, offers comfortable sofas and a bar. The shop, having a completely different look from the British bookie, has been made a more attractive destination for women. With the change of the image of a betting shop, people will gradually change the perception that betting is a male-only activity.

It must be noted that Madrid authorities have banned wagering on religion and politics. That’s why Madrid residents will bet on social events and TV competitions.

Opening of a sports betting shop in Madrid is just the beginning of the growth of the Spanish gambling market. British bookie William Hill and Spanish gambling firm Codere plan to open 70 sports betting shops – that is only across the Madrid area, the first of Spain’s 17 regions to grant licenses. They expect the Spanish betting market to grow to 39 billion euro, which is equal to $57.8 million, by 2010.

But the Victoria brand won’t be the only one presented in Spain. Last week Greece’s Inralot got a license. Then, Austrian firms Bwin and Betbull are planning to open a joint franchise as well, while Gala Coral has been in talks with potential Spanish partners for 6 months.

Horse Racing and Gambling in New Zealand

Horse racing and gambling are one of the best tourist attractions in New Zealand.

The research published in the New Zealand has shown that “between 1999 and 2003 racing and gambling had the highest return on investment along with activities such as bungee jumping and guided tours”.

Tourists prefer gambling to any other kinds of entertainment in New Zealand. As the result, its yields amounted to 15.9. To compare, zoos, parks and gardens only achieved a 1.3 per cent return, shopping malls – a 14 per cent return, while the museums – only 0.5%.

With such figures, no wonder more of a gamble will open up.

Reading Room to Redesign Victor Chandler’s Site

Reading Room (digital communications company) has been chosen by Victor Chandler to redesign its online sportsbetting presence. Reading Room’s creative approach and enthusiasm helped the company win the competition.

Reading Room has to renovate the company’s flagship site at VictorChandler.com. The task “to attract new audiences to bet on soccer and the emerging pastime of in-running betting while retaining the loyalty of the site’s core racing customers”, should be completed in time for re-launch before the start of the Euro 2008 soccer competitions in June. But the task has not been limited only by “groundbreaking designs”. Reading Room has “to use its usability experience to maximise revenue opportunities by simplifying and demystifying the complex betting process”.
