What People Think of Becoming a $5 Million Winner?

What would you do if you won $5 million in the lottery? Take time before answering!

Guess what Canadians would do…

According to the survey conducted by Ipsos Reid in November the majority of people said that they would keep their jobs. 35% would quit their jobs (the most likely ones to quit their job are women at the age of 45 to 65 years old). 17% admitted that they would start their own business. 13% of the surveyed people would change their careers. 8% admitted they would go back to school, and only 3% would use a portion of their winning to start a charitable foundation.

The survey has shown “the notion of jackpot winners sailing off into the sunset never to be seen punching a time clock again is more myth than reality”.

End of French Gambling Monopoly?

The problem of legalizing online gambling market in France may soon be solved, as this question is under consideration in the French government.

What is going on now is that the gambling market has been monopolized by the French lottery Francaise des Jeux and PMU (pari-mutuel horse betting monopoly). They offer online betting and scratchcards. Other internet games involving money are illegal. As a result, some heads of foreign online gambling operators have been arrested in France for violating French gambling laws.

The November report into how the online gambling market might be opened up in France is being studied by Prime Minister Francois Fillon’s office. The regulation of the gambling market in France may come as a result of “issuing licenses limiting online betting to sporting events, including betting on card games, or licensing all games except lotteries”.

It must be noted that France has already received a warning from the European Commission saying that “the restrictions of the sports betting market are not compatible with existing EU law and that the measures…to restrict the free movement of sports betting services have not been shown to be necessary, proportionate and non-discriminatory”.

Spanish Betting Market Expanding

Now Spanish residents are able to bet in Spain’s first sports betting shop (under the joint venture’s Victoria brand) opened last week. Before that Spaniards had to go online to bet on sporting events.

Gleaming with chrome and glass, Victoria’s new shop which is located above a Codere casino, Madrid, offers comfortable sofas and a bar. The shop, having a completely different look from the British bookie, has been made a more attractive destination for women. With the change of the image of a betting shop, people will gradually change the perception that betting is a male-only activity.

It must be noted that Madrid authorities have banned wagering on religion and politics. That’s why Madrid residents will bet on social events and TV competitions.

Opening of a sports betting shop in Madrid is just the beginning of the growth of the Spanish gambling market. British bookie William Hill and Spanish gambling firm Codere plan to open 70 sports betting shops – that is only across the Madrid area, the first of Spain’s 17 regions to grant licenses. They expect the Spanish betting market to grow to 39 billion euro, which is equal to $57.8 million, by 2010.

But the Victoria brand won’t be the only one presented in Spain. Last week Greece’s Inralot got a license. Then, Austrian firms Bwin and Betbull are planning to open a joint franchise as well, while Gala Coral has been in talks with potential Spanish partners for 6 months.
