To Win and not to be Prone to Expenditures
February 3rd, 2008Author: Mark Newman
This week a 92-year-old man won a massive casino jackpot for the second time in his life. Elmer Sherwin from Ohio netted himself $21.1 million playing a Megabucks slot machine at the Cannery Hotel and Casino. In 1989 he won the $4.6 million jackpot playing a Megabucks machine at the Mirage Casino.
It must be noted that the chance of winning the Megabucks progressive jackpot is very low. They say it is less than one in ten million. So, it is really surprising how Sherwin has managed to do it twice. At the moment he is the only person who has won the top prize for a second time.
Sherwin resides in Las Vegas. He lives with his son and daughter-in-law. He still drives. During World War II he managed to escape death twice. He lived through the Great Depression that taught him not to be prone to big expenditures. Having won huge prizes, he is still very sensible what concerns spending money.

Wow, that’s insane. This guy has to be one of the luckiest guys around, or maybe it’s a karmic correction for narrowly escaping death twice. His son and duaghter-in-law must be totally stoked.
The other great thing to see is that a large win did not translate directly into a large problem,, as is often the case when people win big and have a tendency to lose the plot.
Congrats Mr. Sherwin, my christmas wish list is on it’s way to you Sir.

I read about this guy! He lived through the Great Depression, so wasn’t used to spending a lot of money. Apparently the Cannery representatives offered him a complimentary meal while he was waiting for his winnings. He instead asked for1 hot dog, ate half and wrapped the rest to take home to eat later (and this guy just won $21.1 million!!!)
